  96. 2. WHAT IS STEGANOS FOR WINDOWS95/NT4.0?

  98. Steganos [Greek]: protected, protecting; covered, covering.

  100.   Thank you for trying Steganos for Windows95/NT4.0. Steganos is
  101. an easy to use, yet powerful wizard style program to hide and/or
  102. encrypt files.
  103.  
  104.   Steganos encrypts files and hides them within BMP, DIB, VOC,
  105. WAV, ASCII, and HTML files. (For a complete listing of features
  106. see section 6.)
  107.  
  108.   When using only cryptographic methods, data may be unreadable
  109. but it is obvious that there is sensitive data - that there is a
  110. secret. If data is only hidden and not encrypted one could search
  111. all suspicious carrier files for hidden data and perhaps find
  112. sensitive information.
  113.  
  114.   Steganos combines two powerful methods: Cryptography - to make
  115. data unreadable to anyone who does not know the password - and
  116. steganography - to hide the existence of data. Files being hidden
  117. and encrypted by Steganos can be neither read nor detected easily.
  118.  
  119.   It could become necessary to hide the existence of information.
  120. The government could someday force you to give out your passwords
  121. or even forbid strong cryptography, so stand-alone cryptography
  122. wouldn't make sense any more.

  124.   Be prepared - with Steganos for Windows95/NT4.0.

  127. 3. THE SHAREWARE IDEA
  128.  
  129.   If you see a shareware screen when starting Steganos you are
  130. using the shareware version. You may use it for 30 days. If you
  131. want to continue using Steganos after your 30 day evaluation
  132. period you must purchase the registered version.

  134.   Otherwise, you must remove the shareware version from your
  135. system. Click the Order Steganos button on the Steganos start
  136. screen for further information.

  138.   All shareware screens are left out in the registered version.

  140.   You may - you even should - give the unregistered test
  141. version to your friends. The program itself, the documentation
  142. and all other files must be passed in their original, unchanged
  143. form.

  145.   Use of this software is permitted only to the extent
  146. reasonably required to determine whether to purchase the
  147. software.

  149.   After payment is made, use of this software is limited to use
  150. on only a single personal computer or workstation which is not
  151. used as a server. An additional payment is required for each use

  177. 5. ORDERING THE REGISTERED VERSION

  185. - Hides all types of files within image files (BMP, DIB), sound
  186. files (WAV, VOC), and all types of ASCII text files or HTML
  187. documents.
  188.  
  189. - Easy to use Wizard style interface which will guide even
  190. absolute beginners through the program while allowing effective
  191. usage by advanced users
  192.  
  193. - Allows encrypting files only (without hiding) as SEF files
  194. (Steganos Encrypted File); can be decrypted by simply double
  195. clicking on an SEF files' icon
  196.  
  197. - Strong encryption: The used HWY1 encryption algorithm
  198. generates an output stream which is compatible to the "Alleged
  199. RC4" ("RC4" is a trademark of RSA Data Securities Inc.) output
  200. stream as posted by the Cypherpunks on the Usenet. Steganos for
  201. Windows 95's implementation of this algorithm was developed
  202. entirely from the description of Bruce Schneier (see "Applied
  203. Cryptography", Wiley, ISBN 0-471-11709-9).

  205. - Compresses files to hide using a to increase efficiency (using
  206. zlib by Jean-loup Gailly and Mark Adler. They are members of the
  207. Info-ZIP group and provided code for the popular WinZip program)

  209. - Converts pictures with few colors to 16.7M color images (24
  210. bit format)

  212. - Features hiding files only (if data has already been encrypted)

  214. - Hides in carrier files of unsupported format after the user
  215. entered some information on the carrier file

  217. - Features backing up carrier file before hiding data inside
  218.  
  219. - Optionally wipes file to hide after being hidden/encrypted

  221. - Encrypted files and files in which data has been hidden can
  222. be sent via e-mail by one mouse click

  225. suspicion on the file

  228. developer's for letting them advance their programs with the
